about

I may be going out on a limb here, but it strikes me that occasionally the relationships described in country music songs are not entirely healthy ones.

Anyway, I decided to write a country song and this is what I ended up with. I think the lyrics are a bit too twisty for their own good, particularly in the first verse, but hopefully it still works OK. I was a little stumped about what to do in the second verse for a while, but I decided that we needed to see how the guy's partner was doing. Turns out, they're both doing great on their own. Those guys really need to get back together!

Chris Monti suggested that it might be fun to record this live, with both of us standing around a single stereo microphone playing and singing, and that's just how we did it - no overdubbing, no splicing. I think it gives it a nice quality that would otherwise be hard to capture.

lyrics

My life has changed since we parted.
I've been sleeping eight hours a night.
and I must confess I drink a lot less,
I'm not always looking for a fight.

If you'd asked me, I'd never have guessed this would be
The way I'd be living today.
Won't you come back and rescue me?
I just can't go on living this way ...

BRIDGE:
Now, some folks might call us codependent
And say our reuniting's insane;
But things ain't the same without you, my dear --
Please come back and make me miserable again.

Yesterday I saw you in town, looking
happier than I've seen you in years
And suddenly I missed those old time feelings:
Anger, betrayal, and fear.

BRIDGE:
I want us to be more than lovers
And I want us to be less than friends
Won't you look into your heart and come back, dear?
We can drive each other crazy again.

Won't you break my heart and come back dear?
We can be codependent again.
