about

I go to a lot of open mikes, and one evening I went to one and there was a gentleman there who sang a song he wrote which had a chorus 'I've got a soft spot ... in my heart for you.' I was super low on sleep, and whenever he got to the chorus my overtaxed brain wanted to fill it in with 'I've got a soft spot ... on my head for you.' I went home that night and wrote a couple of verses on that theme as a joke and shared them with some friends.

It could have ended there, but as it happened I was supposed to play at a baby shower the next weekend, so one of my friends suggested working those lyrics into an actual song and playing it at the shower. So I added a bridge, rewrote and expanded the lyrics a bit, and ended up with this.

When I first started performing the song, it was still pretty overtly jokey, but Chris Monti suggested that I should just try performing it straight, and that's how I do it now. My dad described it as the second-strangest song he's heard. (The strangest was a blue yodel I wrote about time travel, but I'm still tinkering with that one; maybe it'll be on the next album.)

lyrics

I can't tell where I begin and you end.
Can't distinguish between me and you.
To my earthly needs you always tend.
Now hold me. You know that it's true:

I've got a soft spot on my head for you.
I've got a soft spot on my head for you.

When you leave I feel like you're gone for good,
And all that I can do is cry.
Without you I could barely lift my head.
Now hold me, I'll tell you why:

I've got a soft spot on my head for you.
I've got a soft spot on my head for you.

I have no words to say how I feel.
When you're near I am weak in the knees.
With you, I can take this world's ordeal.
Never leave me, mama, please ...
Never leave me, mama, please ...

You're always there when I need a change.
You're there when I wake in the night.
I know that whatever the day will bring,
You'll make everything all right.

I've got a soft spot on my head for you.
I've got a soft spot on my head for you.
