about
The Rhode Island Songwriters Association (
www.risongwriters.com) has a monthly series called 'Songwriters in the Round'. Every month, four songwriters play four original songs each, and one of those songs has to be on a theme picked by the previous month's audience. I've gotten a lot of good songs out of this series, as well as a number of songs that will never see the light of day again.
'Circumstantial Evidence' is one of the songs I've written for this series. The theme I was writing on was 'Powdered Sugar Doughnuts'.
When playing the song live, I sometimes play it on the piano, with an ascending bass line at the beginning of each verse, and other times I play it on the guitar, with a descending bass line. For the recording I combined both versions. The two bass lines mesh together in a slightly off-kilter way that I thought was appropriate to the song.
lyrics
Just because I'm wobbly on my pins
doesn't mean I've been drinking too much gin.
It might be that I can't walk the line.
It might be I smell of cheap wine.
But it's all just circumstantial evidence.
Who're you gonna trust, me or your senses?
Just because there's powder on my nose
doesn't give you the right to suppose.
Maybe I had a powdered sugar doughnut
Or something else, there's no way you can know what.
'Cause it's all just circumstantial evidence.
Who're you gonna trust, me or your senses?
Just because I smell a bit of smoke
Doesn't mean I've had a little toke.
Could be I passed a conflageration,
So don't accuse me of intoxication.
'Cause it's all just circumstantial evidence.
Who're you gonna trust, me or your senses?
